Project Overview
This project involved designing and deploying a private cloud network tunnel to access region-locked content in East Asia (Hong Kong/Japan). Unlike commercial VPNs that suffer from congestion and high jitter, this solution utilizes a dedicated AWS cloud instance to maintain stable, low-latency (< 100ms) connectivity required for real-time rhythm games.

- Dedicated Bandwidth: Private cloud instance ensures consistent network speeds without "neighbor noise."
- Optimized Protocol: Uses WireGuard (UDP) instead of OpenVPN/TCP for faster handshakes and lower overhead.
- Geo-Unblocking: Successfully routes traffic through specific AWS regions to bypass country-level restrictions.
- Security Hardened: Custom firewall rules allowing only specific UDP ports and key-based authentication (Curve25519).
- Persistent Connectivity: Static IP configuration to prevent connection loss during instance reboots.
Technical Implementation
The solution was deployed on an Ubuntu 24.04 instance within Amazon Lightsail. The implementation focused on overcoming standard cloud networking challenges such as NAT traversal and firewall management.
- Infrastructure Provisioning: Deployed AWS Lightsail instances in `ap-northeast-1` (Tokyo) and `ap-southeast-1` (Singapore).
- NAT Traversal Fix: Diagnosed and resolved a critical IP mismatch where the VPN configuration defaulted to the AWS internal private IP (172.x.x.x). Manually reconfigured the interface endpoint to bind to the Public Elastic IP.
- Firewall Configuration: Configured AWS Security Groups to allow inbound UDP traffic on non-standard ports (randomized for security) while blocking unused TCP vectors.
- Client Configuration: Generated and deployed QR-code based configuration files for seamless mobile client integration.
Results & Impact
The project successfully established a stable, low-latency link between India and the target regions.
- Latency Reduction: Achieved an average ping of ~85ms to Singapore (vs. 150ms+ on public VPNs).
- Zero Packet Loss: UDP optimization ensured "Perfect" timing windows remained consistent during gameplay.
- Cost Efficiency: Leveraged AWS Lightsail's bundled pricing model to keep operational costs under $5/month.
Future Enhancements
To further professionalize this deployment, future updates will include:
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Automating the entire setup using Terraform.
- User Data Scripting: Creating a boot script that auto-installs and configures WireGuard upon instance creation.
- Traffic Monitoring: Implementing a lightweight dashboard (like Grafana or simple vnStat) to track bandwidth usage.
